Overview
Prime Architects designed a complete roof replacement for the historic Ed Edmondson U.S. Courthouse. The design adds a new lightning protection system. Work had to avoid disrupting courthouse operations and meet historic preservation standards.
Technical Scope
- Assessment/Pre-design: 3D scanning captured existing conditions. Infrared scans of electrical panels informed system integration decisions.
- Architecture: Full roof replacement design with drawings, specifications and phasing. Durable materials and envelope detailing chosen for the historic building.
- Structural: Structural engineering for the roof replacement.
- Electrical: New lightning protection system detailed to respect the building’s original appearance.
- Historic Preservation: Coordination with SHPO and GSA.
Challenge and Solution
The roof had to be replaced without disrupting court operations, under strict preservation standards. Phased construction documents and discreet LPS detailing addressed both.
