Replace Underground Storage Tank, Building 2111, Tinker AFB

Overview

Prime Architects replaced two underground tanks at the Building 2111 purge tank facility with one aboveground tank. A 15,000 gal waste fuel tank and a 1,000 gal wastewater tank came out. A 20,000 gal double-walled steel AST went in, built in two government-required phases.

Technical Scope

  • Hazardous Materials: Phase 1 removed both double-walled fiberglass USTs and all associated plumbing. Tanks and contaminated soil were disposed of per State of Oklahoma regulations, and the excavation was backfilled with clean fill.
  • Civil/Site: Phase 2 built a concrete secondary containment structure with integral tank foundations.
  • Mechanical: 20,000 gal double-walled steel AST with piping and pumps. Electric fuel transfer pump (100 gpm or greater) moves spent fuel from trailers into the AST.
  • Electrical: New 150A 480/277V panel with 150A main breaker and 480V pump motor circuit. Tank equipment grounding. Conduit and wire to the AST level sensor.
  • Controls/Monitoring: New tank level monitoring panel, tested and certified as operating.

Challenge and Solution

The facility stayed in service during tank replacement. Construction followed a two-phase sequence the government required: removal and remediation first, then the new AST.
