Overview
Prime Architects replaced the steel-framed high bay windows in both hangars of Building 240. New insulated translucent wall panels keep the look of the original windows. The hangars stayed occupied and in use during the work.
Technical Scope
- Architecture: Removed existing steel-framed windows in both hangar bays. Installed Major Industries Guardian 275 insulated translucent wall panels with white exterior and crystal interior face sheets. An in-line Shoji panel pattern matches the historic window look.
- Hazardous Materials: Lead-based paint at fasteners on the existing frames was removed and remediated before window removal.
- Structural: ROCA Engineering analyzed the 1930s concrete roof slab using as-built plans and on-site load testing, which set the roof capacity for scaffolding loads.
- CPS: Construction management of multiple lifts and scaffolding on the existing roof, with safety planning coordinated with users and the government.
Challenge and Solution
The windows sit more than 30 ft above the ground, so lifts and scaffolding had to bear on a 1930s concrete roof. Load testing and structural analysis confirmed the roof could carry them.
Outcome
No safety issues were reported during demolition and installation.
