This project supported the mission of the Veterans Affairs Saint Louis Health Care System (VASTLHCS) by preparing designated spaces for the installation of new Radiographic and Fluoroscopic medical equipment. Comprehensive architectural and engineering (A/E) services were provided to renovate and upgrade rooms A217 and A217A.
Site Preparation & Renovation:
- Architectural finishes in rooms A217 and A217A were refreshed, including demolition of outdated cabinets, flooring, ceiling grids, and other finishes.
- Penetration of existing shielded walls was avoided to maintain radiation protection; when wall modifications were necessary, a third-party, board-certified radiation shielding design was provided per NCRP Report No. 151.
- New structural supports were installed as required for equipment, including floor plates, door assemblies, and ceiling mounts.
- Doors, hardware, flooring, casework, sinks, and eyewash stations were upgraded.
- Medical gas connections were evaluated and optimized for improved usability.
Systems Upgrades:
- Mechanical (HVAC), electrical, plumbing, and fire suppression systems were assessed and upgraded to support new equipment and comply with VA
- Technical Information Library (TIL) standards.
- Lighting was replaced with LED fixtures and exit signage was updated.
- Low-voltage connections for data, telecommunications, and monitoring systems were provided.
Design & Documentation:
- Thorough field investigations were conducted and a comprehensive report of existing conditions was submitted.
- Construction documents, including drawings and specifications, were developed for competitive bidding and construction.
- All designs complied with applicable codes, VA standards, and sustainability requirements.
- Design narratives, plans, specifications, schedules, and cost estimates were submitted at each milestone.
Construction Period Services:
- The team participated in pre-bid and pre-construction conferences.
- Submittals and shop drawings were reviewed, and technical consultation was provided throughout construction.
- Site visits and final inspections were conducted, with findings documented to support VA contract management.
The renovation ensured the designated rooms were fully prepared for the installation and operation of new Radiographic and Fluoroscopic equipment, with all supporting infrastructure upgraded as needed. The project emphasized patient and staff safety, minimal disruption to ongoing operations, and compliance with all VA and federal requirements.
