Prime Architects conducted a comprehensive Legionella Feasibility Study for the Audie L. Murphy Memorial VA Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. First, we collaborated with the hospital staff to understand their vision and requirements. This study aimed to identify feasible engineering controls to prevent Legionella growth in the hospital’s potable water systems, in line with VHA Directive 1061.

To begin with, we assessed the hospital’s existing water systems, which span approximately 1 million square feet. We focused on setting water temperature limits for Legionella control in the building’s hot and cold-water distribution systems. Moreover, we implemented continuous water temperature monitoring and established a regular flushing operations and maintenance (O&M) program.

During the planning phase, we conducted thorough site visits and field investigations. This proactive approach allowed us to address any potential challenges early on. Additionally, we reviewed a previous chlorination study and provided an analysis of the best options for maintaining safe water temperatures. We also recommended continuous monitoring equipment and provided a cost analysis for its installation.

The study’s findings highlighted the importance of maintaining strict water temperature controls to prevent Legionella growth. We proposed engineering control strategies that included setting specific temperature limits, continuous monitoring, and regular maintenance. Furthermore, our recommendations ensured compliance with VHA Directive 1061, which focuses on preventing healthcare-associated Legionella disease and scald injuries.
